Leveling Up the Game: How Locked In Elite & Nike EYBL Will Grow Basketball Across the Region

Locked In Elite’s partnership with Nike EYBL isn’t just about a single team or a single season

Locked In Elite’s partnership with Nike EYBL isn’t just about a single team or a single season, it stands to elevate the entire basketball ecosystem in Australasia. By plugging into Nike’s globally renowned grassroots network, Australia and New Zealand are poised for a basketball growth spurt unlike any before. This is a story of investment, inspiration, and the integration of a region into the worldwide hoops conversation.

One immediate impact is the infusion of resources and infrastructure. Nike’s backing brings credibility and support. We’re talking about everything from gear to training to event organization. EYBL teams are famously well-supported, players and coaches even wear provided game gear as part of the league’s professional standards. That means Locked In Elite’s kids get access to top-of-the-line uniforms, shoes, and equipment that rival what college teams use. It might seem like a small detail, but running onto the court in the same Nike EYBL jersey that the nation’s best wear can do wonders for a young player’s confidence and pride. Moreover, Nike has a track record of investing in development: they haven’t become the gold standard by accident, but by ensuring athletes have “the stage, community and tools they need” to succeed. Now that stage and those tools are being extended to our region.

There’s also a broader developmental impact: raising the level of play locally. When you know your program is competing on an EYBL level, everything intensifies, practice habits, coaching tactics, fitness standards. The coaches at Locked In Elite and peer programs will likely adopt new training methodologies gleaned from EYBL experience, whether it’s defensive schemes honed against elite American athletes or conditioning drills to match EYBL pace. Those improvements trickle down. A rising tide lifts all boats; as Locked In Elite raises its game, other local clubs and schools will push harder to keep up. In time, the overall competitiveness of youth basketball in Australia/New Zealand should climb. Think of it like iron sharpening iron, having an EYBL-caliber program in the mix means everyone else has to “level up” just to stay in the conversation.

Crucially, this partnership helps solve a longstanding challenge: talent retention and attraction. In the past, many of our brightest teenage stars felt compelled to leave home, whether to U.S. prep schools, European academies, or elsewhere, to advance their careers. Now, with a homegrown pathway to the world’s most scouted youth league, there’s less pressure to export our talent prematurely. A 15-year-old phenom can decide to stay with their local program an extra year or two, knowing they’ll get EYBL exposure right here. Additionally, the prestige of EYBL might attract talent from around the Asia-Pacific region to these shores. If Australia/New Zealand is known as an international outpost of the EYBL, ambitious players from neighboring countries (or Aussies and Kiwis living abroad) might seek out Locked In Elite or similar programs for that opportunity.

There’s an inspirational wave to consider as well. Picture a young kid in Melbourne or Wellington, maybe just 10 years old, watching Locked In Elite’s highlights from a tournament in the U.S. They’re seeing Aussie and Kiwi uniforms battling teams with famous names like “Team Why Not” or “MeanStreets.” That kid realizes something: we can play on that stage. It’s hard to overstate the power of representation. The next Patty Mills or Steven Adams could be that kid who gets motivated by watching players from their hometown compete (and hold their own) in EYBL games streamed online. Nike’s mission has always been to grow the game globally, and now the Oceania region is part of that mission in a direct way. We’re likely to see increased grassroots participation, more youngsters choosing basketball because they see a pathway that wasn’t visible before.

Finally, this growth isn’t happening in isolation. It’s knitting Australia and New Zealand into the fabric of global basketball development. Down the line, when an EYBL alumnus from Locked In Elite signs with a Division I college or hears their name in the NBA draft, it will validate the progress of the entire system. And that success will encourage sponsors, governing bodies, and communities here to further invest in the sport. In essence, Locked In Elite’s leap into the EYBL is acting as a catalyst. It’s accelerating the evolution of the game in our region, raising standards, expanding horizons, and proving that our local talent can compete with anyone in the world.
